Must-See Places

01
Ancient City of Pompeii
The city of Rome frozen under the ashes of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It slept underground for 1700 years, but now it stands almost in its entirety - down to the streets, the houses, the colors of the frescoes. Start from the Forum and walk up to the Mystic Villa. You can't do it all in one day, allow at least 4-5 hours. Hat and water are mandatory, no shade. There is no other place that describes the ancient world so concretely.
Via Villa dei Misteri 1, 80045 Pompei NA · 09:00 - 19:00 (winter 17:00) · 18 EUR (full ticket)

02
Cappella Sansevero (Veiled Christ)
The most impressive small museum in Naples. Inside is the 'Cristo Velato' (Veiled Christ) statue, sculpted by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753 — a veil of marble so thin that you can actually see the body underneath. It's like a miracle. Tickets are limited, be sure to buy online. You stay for 15-20 minutes, but those 15 minutes will not make you forget Naples.
Via Francesco de Sanctis 19/21, 80134 Naples NA · 09:00 - 19:00 (Closed Tuesday) · 10 EUR (online reservation required)

03
Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello)
It is not an exaggeration to say that it is the most beautiful coast in the world. Pastel colored houses descend from steep cliffs to the sea. Positano is the photogenic one, Amalfi is the historical one, Ravello is famous for its high gardens. It is possible to travel by mini bus (SITA) from Sorrento, but the road is winding and nauseating. You can also go by boat — it's more expensive, but the view is impressive.
Costiera Amalfitana, SA · All day long · Bus 15 EUR, boat tour 80 EUR
★ 4.8
04
Herculaneum (Ercolano)
Pompeii's smaller but better preserved sibling. Vesuvius buried this place in the same eruption, but the lava flow preserved the wooden doors of the houses, furniture and even food by carbonizing them. It is much quieter and less crowded than Pompeii. Half a day is enough. Go after seeing Pompeii and you'll know the difference — both are impressive, but Herculaneum is more intimate.
Corso Resina 187, 80056 Ercolano NA · 08:30 - 19:30 (winter 17:00) · 13 EUR
★ 4.7
05
Naples Historical Center (Spaccanapoli)
The historical center, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is 'split' in two by the straight street called Spaccanapoli. As you walk along Decumano Maggiore, 400-year-old churches left and right, laundry hanging from balconies, motorcycles, shouting vendors, the smell of pizza ovens — this chaos is Naples itself. Christmas scene (presepe) masters work on San Gregorio Armeno street all year round.
Spaccanapoli, 80138 Naples NA · 24 hours · Free
★ 4.7
06
Isle of Capri
Located south of the Bay of Naples, it is one of the most expensive holiday islands in the world, but a one-day trip is reasonable. Ferry 50 minutes from Beverello port. The Blue Cave (Grotta Azzurra) is connected to the air and the sea, enter it by boat if it is open — the blue light coming from the water is from another world. Go up to Anacapri, see the Faraglioni rocks from above. Expensive but a one day dream.
Capri NA, Italy · Ferry 07:00 - 19:00 · Ferry 25 EUR round trip

Must-Try Flavors

01
Tandem · Neapolitan Ragù
They only do one thing: ragù napoletano. Meat-tomato sauce cooked for 8 hours, with homemade paccheri pasta. It's a small venue in Spaccanapoli, seats 20 people. Book in advance. Apart from the classic ragù, there is also 'ragù vegetariano'. The house wine comes in a bowl and is reasonably priced. If you want to experience the essence of Naples cuisine in one plate.
12-18 EUR (main course) · Via Mezzocannone 134, 80134 Naples NA
★ 4.7
02
L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele · Neapolitan Pizza
Same place since 1870, with the same two pizza types: Margherita and Marinara. There is nothing else. They don't argue either — sit down if that's what you want, otherwise leave. Julia Roberts ate here in Eat Pray Love, and the world immediately flocked here. Waiting time is 1-2 hours normally. The dough is thin, the edges are soft, the San Marzano tomatoes are legendary. World classic for 5 EUR.
5-7 EUR (pizza) · Via Cesare Sersale 1, 80139 Naples NA
★ 4.6
03
50 Calò di Ciro Salvo · Modern Neapolitan Pizza
Ciro Salvo is a pizzaiolo who is obsessed with dough. The name 50 Kalò comes from its high-hydration dough formula — lighter, more digestible pizza. On the banks of Mergellina, with sea views. If Da Michele/Sorbillo is old school, this place is the 'modern Neapolitan' interpretation. Along with the classics, try the bufala mozzarella + yellow tomato combination.
8-14 EUR (pizza) · Piazza Sannazaro 201/B, 80122 Naples NA
★ 4.6
04
Pizzeria Sorbillo · Neapolitan Pizza
Gino Sorbillo shop on Spaccanapoli is the star name of the Naples pizza world. More diverse menu than Da Michele — try the friarielli (local greens) + sausage pizza here. Get ready for the queue in front of the door, write your name, walk around. Dough fermented for 24 hours, sour-soft texture. There are 21 pizzaiolo in the Sorbillo family — the gene thing.
6-10 EUR (pizza) · Via dei Tribunali 32, 80138 Naples NA

Shopping Points

01
Via San Gregorio Armeno · Local
'Presepe street' — workshops of Christmas scene (presepe) masters are open all year round. Handmade small figures: shepherds, animals, but also football players, politicians, celebrities. Maradona figures come in all sizes. It's crowded as hell between November and December, but it's quieter in the summer. Buy a small terracotta figure as a souvenir — it's Naples's signature.
Via San Gregorio Armeno, 80138 Naples NA · Figure 5-50 EUR
★ 4.6
02
Galleria Umberto I · Popular
Elegant shopping mall architecture built in 1890—the younger sibling of Milan's Vittorio Emanuele. High gallery with glass ceiling, marble floor, four-armed structure. Boutique shops and cafes inside. Go for the architectural experience rather than the shopping. The iron-glass structure on the ceiling is an example of the industrial elegance of the 1800s.
Via San Carlo, 80132 Naples NA · Free entry
★ 4.5
03
Via Toledo · Popular
Naples' main pedestrian shopping street stretches 1.2 km from Piazza Plebiscito to Piazza Dante. International chains, Italian brands, bookstores, ice cream parlors. Down the street is the Toledo subway station — voted the most beautiful subway station in the world, worth seeing for its blue mosaics alone.
Via Toledo, 80132 Naples NA · Middle segment
★ 4.4
04
Via Chiaia · Premium
The Chiaia district is the chic side of Naples — the Naples version of Rome's Via del Corso and Milan's Montenapoleone. Italian brands, shoemakers, tailors. Escape the chaos of Spaccanapoli and find elegance here. Finally, end the day with an aperitivo in Piazza dei Martiri.
Via Chiaia, 80132 Naples NA · Middle-upper segment

About Naples

Naples is the largest city in the south of Italy — and undoubtedly the most real. Rome ironed, Florence museum, Venice showcase; Naples, on the other hand, is a life screaming on the streets. In the shadow of Vesuvius, 12 km away lies the still active crater of the same volcano that buried a Roman city in 79 AD. Pompeii + Herculaneum + Vesuvius + Capri + Amalfi Coast — there is no other place in the world where these five can be accessed from a single center.

Pizza Margherita was invented here in 1889. Pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito put the colors of the Italian flag (green basil, white mozzarella, red tomato) on a dough for Queen Margherita, and the world's most beloved dish was born. The pizza you eat for 5 EUR at Da Michele today is that tradition.

There is a 30-meter-tall Maradona fresco on the streets of Quartieri Spagnoli — the Argentinian legend who led Naples to the championship in 1987 is like the patron saint of this city. Laundry hangs from the balconies, motorcycles cling to their horns, vendors are shouting, children are playing football, pizza fritta makers are taking hot dough out of the oven. Chaos? Yes. Noise? A lot. But this happened, this is real, this is not Disneyland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Naples safe?

Generally yes, but normal city warnings apply. The area around Garibaldi train station and some surrounding areas are deserted at night; Watch out for pickpockets in crowded tourist areas (Spaccanapoli, Toledo). Carry your bag in front, wave your phone in the air. Naples is a safe city if you know the rules.

Can Pompeii and Vesuvius be reached in one day?

Yes, if you plan hard, it will be enough. Enter Pompeii at 9 am and tour for 4 hours. Take a shuttle from Pompeii to Vesuvius (45 minutes drive + 40 minutes crater walk). Return to Naples at 17:00. It's tiring but possible. Ideally leave it for two days.

Amalfi or Capri?

If you can do both, do it. If you have to choose only one: Capri if you stay for one day (ferry + island tour), Amalfi Coast if you can spare two days (Positano + Amalfi + Ravello trio). Capri is an expensive pocket watch, Amalfi is a large painting.

Where is the best pizza: Da Michele or Sorbillo?

There is no answer to this debate. Da Michele is classic, just Margherita and Marinara, thin dough, same since 1870. Sorbillo has a more diverse menu, a more modern interpretation, the queue is still there. Try both and find your own answer. Third step: 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo — the new generation dough specialist.

How to get from Istanbul to Naples?

Turkish Airlines offers direct flights from Istanbul to Naples (approximately 3 hours). Pegasus and Wizz Air may have limited seasonal flights. There are also connecting options via Rome or Milan. Ticket prices increase in the summer months, March-May and October-November are more affordable.

Is Naples the city of Maradona?

Undisputed. Diego Maradona, who played for Naples from 1984 to 1991, led the club to two Serie A titles (1987, 1990) and a UEFA Cup (1989) — Naples have never been greater before or since. When he died in 2020, the city mourned for days. San Paolo Stadium was renamed 'Diego Armando Maradona Stadium'. The giant fresco in the Quartieri Spagnoli is like a place of pilgrimage.

Which neighborhood makes sense to stay in Naples?

Centro Storico (Spaccanapoli area) is ideal for a first visit — walking distance to everything, but noisy. Chiaia is more elegant and calm, for couples. Vomero is a high neighborhood, with a view, but you can get to the center by funicular. Avoid the area around Garibaldi train station.

How many days to visit Naples?

2 days are enough for the city center. But if you add Pompeii + Vesuvius (1 day), Capri (1 day), Amalfi Coast (1-2 days), 5-7 days is ideal. The richness of the region does not make the city worth visiting alone — think of it with its surroundings.
