Must-See Places

01
Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay
The bay where Leonardo DiCaprio's movie 'The Beach' was shot. It was completely closed in 2018 for environmental protection, and reopened in 2022 with a restriction on the number of daily visitors. It is still forbidden to enter the water, but even seeing the turquoise water from the shore makes you accept that if there is such a color somewhere in the world, it is here. Daily speedboat tours from Phuket are 1,800-3,500 THB. Choose the tour in the morning, the crowd will be less.
Phi Phi Leh, Krabi 81000 · Tour hours are 08:00 - 17:00 · Tour 1,800-3,500 THB + 400 THB national park

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island
Fantastic bay in the northeast, formed by limestone cliffs jutting vertically out of the water. The James Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun' (1974) was filmed here — Khao Phing Kan island has since been known as 'James Bond Island'. You can enter the caves by tour boat or canoe. Day tour from Phuket 1,500-2,500 THB, kayak included. The mangrove tunnel part is the real surprise, not the cliffs.

Big Buddha (Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol)
Sitting Buddha statue, 45 meters high, covered in white Burmese marble, on top of Nakkerd hill. Construction started in 2002 and is still being completed with donations. The road to the top is steep and winding — don't try to go up on a scooter, take a taxi. 360 degree view from above: Phang Nga in the north, Patong-Karon-Kata in the west, Chalong in the south. The temple area requires appropriate clothing (covered shoulders/knees), they provide sarongs at the entrance.

Phuket Old Town
Colorful streets in the east of the island, built by Chinese-Portuguese merchants who prospered during the golden age of tin mining (late 19th century). Sino-Portuguese architecture — pastel-colored two-story houses, carved doors, narrow arcades. Thalang Road and Soi Romanee are photography heaven. It is the same family as Singapore and Penang. Walking Street is set up on Sunday evenings; By day, it's time for cafes, boutiques and street art.

05
Karon Beach
Three kilometers south of Patong, it is longer and quieter. The grain of sand is interesting — here is the 'singing sand' that squeaks when you press on it. Family friendly: the waves are more controlled than in Patong, there are small hostels and quiet restaurants behind the beach instead of hotel chains. It is the right decision for those who want to escape the busyness of Patong but want to be close to the sea.

06
Wat Chalong
The most important and largest Buddhist temple in Phuket. The three-storey pagoda contains a relic believed to be a bone fragment of Buddha. It was built in memory of two monks who suppressed the rebellion of Chinese tin miners in the 19th century — there are also statues of them in the temple. Local people really come to worship, it is not a tourist set; be quiet, keep photography limited. Entry is free.

Phuket · Editor's Notes

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the setting of the Andaman Sea. On this 543 square kilometer island, everything is intertwined: the neon nightlife of Patong that lasts until the morning, the family-friendly beaches of Karon and Kata, the Leonardo DiCaprio legend of the Phi Phi Islands, the limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay jutting out of the water, the pastel-colored Sino-Portuguese architecture of the Old Town, the 360-degree panorama from the top of Big Buddha. It's up to you to decide which role you're in — night chaser, honeymooner, family comer.

Staying in Patong is practical for nightlife, but when you wake up in the morning there is still music on the street. If you come with family, switch to Karon or Kata; It's calmer, the waves are more controlled. If you want a romantic getaway, Surin and Kamala beaches in the north have more stylish beach clubs. Everything is within half an hour's scooter distance of Patong.

Remember that Phuket is an island: monsoon season (May-October) rains hit during the day, but the sun comes out half an hour later. The main season is November-April: the sea is glassy, the sky is clear, prices are at their peak. December to February is the busiest but safest. If you can make it in September-October, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an extraordinary experience — there is no other place to see the rituals where Chinese people pass swords through their faces and walk down the street.
