About Dalaman Region

Dalaman is not actually a destination, it is a gateway. A small district in the southeast of Muğla — the city center itself is simple, with a population of 50 thousand. You land here because the main destinations are distributed from here: 50 km to the east, Fethiye-Ölüdeniz axis, 25 km to the west, the luxurious Göcek marina, 75 km to the northwest, Dalyan, the queendom of caretta carettas, 15 km to the west, family-friendly Sarıgerme, 100 km to the east, Kalkan-Kaş, the serene capitals of Lycia.

This page was written for those who will land at Dalaman Airport (DLM) and visit the most selective corner of the Mediterranean. Ölüdeniz is the world capital of paragliding. Fethiye fish market and Lycian way entrance point. Göcek Türkiye's place where yacht owners have a quiet dinner. Dalyan is a special environmental protection zone where caretta spawning is protected. Sarigerme Family beach known for its Hilton and Iberotel resorts. All five are an hour's drive from Dalaman airport.

When deciding: if you are family + beach oriented, choose Sarıgerme/Çalış. If you are after adventure + parachute + Lycian way, Ölüdeniz/Faralya. If you want luxury + silence, Gocek. If you want nature + caretta + thermal, Dalyan. It is possible to see them all in one holiday, but then a rental car is a must.

When to Go

Moon Weather Sea Crowded Price
March-April 18-22° 17° (cold) Low Low
May 24-28° 21° Medium Mid — season begins
June 28-32° 24° High High
July-August 34-40° 27° Too high Hill
September 28-32° 26° Medium-high Golden moon
October 22-26° 23° Medium (Air Games week peak) It starts to fall
November-February 12-18° 16° Most places closed Too low

Practical decision: Best balance Late May–early June or September. In July-August, the sea is perfect, but the Babadağ parachute queue takes 3-4 hours, Saklıkent reaches its visitor limit, and you cannot find parking in Patara. In mid-May the sea is still cool (21°), but daily swimming is at 26-28°. Most beach clubs begin to close except for the Air Games festival week in late October.

How to get there

By plane – required

Dalaman Airport (DLM) is the only airport in the region. THY, Pegasus, AnadoluJet organize daily flights:

  • Istanbul (IST/SAW): 1 hour 25 min, 15+ trips per day in season, 1200–3500 ₺. If you buy Pegasus and AnadoluJet early, the price is reduced to 800 ₺
  • Ankara (ESB): 1 hour 15 minutes, 1-2 trips per day (summer), 1000–2500 ₺
  • Izmir (ADB): No direct flights. Highway is faster (4 hours)
  • Antalya (AYT): No direct flights. Highway 4-4.5 hours
  • Europe direct: Direct flights to London, Manchester, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Amsterdam in the summer season — British holidaymakers come here directly

By road

850 km, 11 hours from Istanbul. The Bursa–Balıkesir–İzmir–Aydın route is the most comfortable. 13-14 hours by bus, 1300-1800 ₺ Pamukkale/Kâmil Koç. The journey is long, while the plane is reasonably priced, the bus only makes sense for budget reasons.

Airport transfer

6 km from DLM to the city center, distances to surrounding settlements:

  • Dalaman center: 6 km, 10 min, taxi 150-250 ₺
  • Sarigerme: 15 km, 20 min, transfer 300-500 ₺
  • Göcek: 25 km, 25 min, transfer 500-800 ₺
  • Fethiye center: 50 km, 50 min, transfer 800-1200 ₺
  • Ölüdeniz: 60 km, 1 hour, transfer 1000-1500 ₺
  • Dalyan: 25 km, 30 min, transfer 600-900 ₺
  • Kalkan: 100 km, 1.5 hours, transfer 1500-2200 ₺

Havaş does not operate in Dalaman — private transfer companies (HavaTaş, Mete Transfer, Dalaman Airport Transfer) offer 30% cheaper prices with online reservations in advance. Skip it if it's included in the hotel package, if not, be sure to book it in advance — taxis outside the airport are hard to negotiate with.

Urban Transportation

Rental car — almost mandatory

The only logical transportation in this region is a rental car. Distances seem short, but minibus connections are infrequent and time loss is high on the hotel-beach route. There are Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt + 20+ local companies within DLM. Summer season prices:

  • Economic (Fiat Egea, Renault Clio): 1500-2200 ₺ per day
  • Middle class (Megane, Corolla): 2200-3500 ₺
  • SUV (Tucson, Sportage): 3500-5500 ₺
  • Convertible (Mini, BMW): 5000-9000 ₺

Be sure to verify that your insurance package is CDW + full coverage — basic insurance EXCLUDES glass, tires, undercarriage. Road conditions in Türkiye are good, careful driving on mountain roads is sufficient. The descent from Babadağ hill to Ölüdeniz is intense, those with no driver's license may be uneasy.

minibus lines

There is a minibus system in the region, but it is insufficient in terms of tourism:

  • Fethiye–Ölüdeniz: 25 ₺, every 20 min, 30 min
  • Fethiye–Çalış: 15 ₺, frequently
  • Fethiye–Hisarönü/Ovacık: 20 ₺
  • Dalaman–Sarigerme: 25 ₺, 30 min
  • Fethiye–Kalkan/Kaş: 80-120 ₺, hourly

It is also possible to travel between regions by bus (Fethiye–Dalaman 100 ₺, 1 hour), but it is not practical on the beach-hotel-restaurant route.

Boat tour logic

The main transportation of the region is the sea at one point. Ölüdeniz pier, Fethiye port, Göcek marina, Dalyan pier - daily tour boats depart from each of them. Shared 700-1500 ₺ per person, private 8000-30000 ₺/day (10-12 person capacity). Visiting Butterfly Valley, Kabak and Patara from the sea is much more efficient than visiting by land.

Accommodation Regions

Sarıgerme: 15 km from Dalaman airport, the center of family resorts (Hilton Dalaman, Iberotel) with its fine sandy shallow sea. Focused on water park, mini club and all-inclusive; It is not suitable for those looking for city life.

Göcek: Türkiye's luxury marina segment. D-Resort, Rixos Premium and boutique yacht hotels are concentrated; silence, view and fine dining stand out. Nighttime fun with family is limited.

Fethiye center / Calis: Suitable for those looking for city comfort and beach access. Paspatur is close to the evening life, prices are half of Göcek.

Ölüdeniz / Hisarönü / Ovacık: Zero distance to Babadağ parachute and Belcekız Beach. Hisarönü nightlife is intense and noisy; For those who want a quiet accommodation, Ölüdeniz side should be preferred.

Faralya / Kabak Valley: Boutique hotels with views (Reflections, Hillside Beach Club) and ecovillage bungalows on the hillside. Ideal for couples who want to walk the Lycian Way and digital detox.

Dalyan: Caretta caretta spawning area, riverside boutique hostels. Transportation to the beach by boat remains classic; It is suitable for those planning a quiet nature holiday.

Budget Plan

Category Economical (per person/night) Middle segment Luxury
Accommodation 1200-2000 ₺ hostel 3500-7000 ₺ boutique hotel 15000-50000 ₺ resort/villa
Breakfast Including hotel or 200 ₺ Village breakfast 400-500 ₺ Hotel buffet 800-1500 ₺
Noon 200-350 ₺ home restaurant 500-800 ₺ seaside 1500-3000 ₺ fine dining
Evening 350-600 ₺ pita/grilled 800-1500 ₺ fish 2500-5000 ₺ Gocek luxury
Activity 100-200 ₺ entrance/sunbed 800-1500 ₺ boat tour 4500-6500 ₺ parachute + private yacht 15000 ₺
Rental car 1500-2200 ₺ economical 2500-4000 ₺ SUV 6000-9000 ₺ convertible
Daily total 2500-4000 ₺ 6000-10000 ₺ 20000-50000 ₺

Göcek segment separate category - The room price of hotels such as D-Resort, Rixos Premium, Lujo is 25000-60000 ₺ per night in the season. Yacht rental starts from 30000 ₺ per day. They call Bodrum the Saint-Tropez of Türkiye, but Göcek is actually quieter, more expensive and more selective.

Practical Tips

Babadağ parachute — how to choose a pilot?

There are more than 30 parachute companies in Ölüdeniz; The difference in quality is evident. Reasiyon, Sky Sports Paragliding, Easy Riders and Gravity Tandem are among the well-established and certified companies. We recommend that you review Google reviews before applying to the company (200+ reviews and 4.5+ points can be considered as a criterion). The pilot should be expected to have at least 1,000 hours of tandem experience; When in doubt, do not hesitate to ask. The majority of accidents in Babadağ are caused by unplanned landings and failure to read the wind. Reputable companies cancel the flight if the wind conditions are not suitable.

Boat tour — shared vs private

Shared 12 Islands/6 Bays tours departing from Ölüdeniz pier cost 700-1200 ₺ per person. 30-40 people on the same boat, 30-minute breaks in 5-6 bays. It may be inadequate for the family. Private boat (capacity for 12 people) 12000-20000 ₺ per day - If a group of 4 families share, it goes below the shared price per person. Captains generally know the Butterfly Valley route; You can tell the route. Those departing from Gocek marina are more luxurious (glass bottom cabin, lower deck pool) but are 30-40% more expensive.

Rental car insurance

The basic package (CDW + TP) of companies at DLM airport usually does not cover glass, tires, undercarriage. Full insurance (Super Cover) additional 200-400 ₺ per day — definitely buy it. Accidental stone hits are common on mountain roads, repair costs 3000-6000 ₺ per glass. Renting from local companies (Sun Rent, Mete Car) is 20-30% cheaper, but the time it takes to find a replacement vehicle is long. Global brands (Avis, Hertz) are not for prestige — they are for service network.

Encounter protocol with Caretta

Sea turtles lay eggs at Iztuzu Beach and Patara Beach between May and September. Staying on the beach after 20:00 disturbs the eggs. If you see a loggerhead in the sea, do not approach — touching and flash photography are prohibited. Nesting areas are marked with stakes, do not go beyond this line. The environmental protection team issues fines.

Bargain culture

The first price offered at the stalls at the Fethiye Paspatur, Saklıkent exit, and Marmaris bazaar is touristic. The lower limit of the discount is 30%, the target is 40%. Don't exaggerate too much - shopkeepers will be embarrassed and turn away. Same thing for the Monday market. There is no bargaining in Göcek boutiques and marina stores, the sticker price is valid.

Food and beverage — price traps

Stay away from the seaside restaurants on Calis beach and Ölüdeniz Belcekız line that do not list prices on the menu — especially fish. The fish on the counter cannot be cooked without asking for its weight. For places where local people eat, Fethiye center Paspatur and Kayaköy village restaurants are safer. covering fee (service + bread) in Göcek and Marina is 100-200 ₺ and should be stated in the menu.

Travel with children — Sarigerme advantage

The child-friendly number of the region is Sarıgerme. Hilton Dalaman Sarıgerme and Iberotel Sarıgerme family resorts — water park, mini club, children's menu, shallow sea, sandy beach. Children over the age of 6 can go on the Babadağ parachute (with the approval of the tandem pilot). Saklıkent's cool water is suitable for children over the age of 5, but it is risky for small children. The 18 km sandy beach of Patara is great for children, but there is no shade, bring an umbrella.

Travel Guide with Children

Dalaman region is one of the most child-friendly holiday destinations in Türkiye. The shallow and sandy beaches of Sarıgerme, the smooth water of Ölüdeniz lagoon, the natural water park atmosphere of Saklıkent and the caretta caretta turtles of Dalyan make children of all ages happy. Family resorts are also the strength of the region.

Recommendations by Age Group

  • 0-3 years: Sarıgerme beach (shallow, sandy, no waves), mini clubs and baby pools of resorts such as Hilton Dalaman Sarıgerme or Iberotel, Çalış beach (flat walking track). There is a risk of rocking on boat tours; Choose short-term routes.
  • 4-7 years: Dalyan boat tour and caretta caretta observation (children love the turtles), playing in the sand at Iztuzu Beach, swimming in shallow water on the Ölüdeniz lagoon side, resort water parks.
  • 8-12 ages: Water walk in Saklıkent Canyon (suitable for ages 5+, but safer for ages 8+), Butterfly Valley boat trip, Kayaköy ghost village exploration (show them around by telling stories), 12 Islands boat tour.
  • 13+ ages: Babadağ paragliding (tandem, with pilot approval, but 13+ is ideal), deep part of Saklıkent canyon, Patara ancient city + beach combo tour, short stages of the Lycian Way.

Top 5 Kid-Friendly Activities

  1. Dalyan Boat Tour and Caretta Caretta — Seeing caretta caretta turtles in the water while going to Iztuzu Beach by boat from Dalyan canal is a magical experience for children. Kaunos rock tombs are also on the way.
  2. Sarıgerme Beach — Shallow, sandy and waveless; young children play safely. Hilton and Iberotel resorts have water parks, mini clubs and children's animation.
  3. Saklıkent Canyon — Walking in ice-cold stream water is a natural adventure park for children in the summer heat. The wooden platforms and teahouses at the entrance of the canyon are comfortable for families.
  4. Ölüdeniz Lagoon — Türkiye's most famous lagoon is waveless and shallow; Children can swim safely. There is a picnic area on the side of the national park.
  5. Kayaköy (Ghost Village) — A discovery walk among abandoned stone houses and churches exercises children's imagination. If you take him around by telling his story, it will be a history lesson.

Practical Information

  • Baby stroller: Flat ground on Sarigerme and Calis coastal roads, strollers are suitable. The sand on Ölüdeniz Belcekız beach is difficult; In Kayaköy and Saklıkent, baby strollers cannot be used, a kangaroo/carrier is required.
  • Children's menu: Children's buffet is standard in resort hotels. There is a grilled chicken and potato option for children at Fethiye Fish Market. Children's portions can be requested at Calis and Ölüdeniz beach restaurants.
  • Child ticket discounts: Ölüdeniz National Park entrance is free for children under 8 years old. Saklıkent Canyon entrance is discounted for children. On boat tours, ages 0-6 are generally free, ages 7-12 are half price. The age/weight limit for Babadağ parachute tandem flight varies depending on the company.
  • Toilet: Available at beach entrances, restaurants and national park areas. Facilities are limited in Butterfly Valley; Meet your toilet needs before getting on the boat.

Warnings

  • The water in Saklıkent Canyon is very cold (8-10 degrees) and the current is strong; Do not put children under the age of 5 in the water, non-slip shoes are mandatory for everyone.
  • The minimum weight limit for Babadağ paragliding is around 30 kg; It varies depending on the company, please confirm beforehand.
  • In the summer months (July-August) temperatures exceed 40 degrees; There is a high risk of sunstroke in children. Avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00-16:00 and drink plenty of water.

Local Label / Culture Notes

Dalaman region is a touristic Mediterranean route; Swimsuits and bikinis are considered natural around the beach and pool. However, we recommend that you cover your shoulders and knees when entering Fethiye central mosques, Kayaköy ruins and village squares.

When communicating with tradesmen, a warm "hello" and "thanks" are sufficient; Bargaining is expected at Paspatur and Saklıkent stalls, but raising the voice is not welcome. It is customary to present the request for a discount in a polite tone.

Tipping is common in restaurants; 5-10 percent of the account is considered standard. It is an established habit to give the boat captain and tour guide a small tip at the end of the day.

It is forbidden to enter the beach after 20:00 in the Caretta caretta protection zones (Iztuzu, Patara); Flash photography and crossing beyond the staked line attracts environmental protection penalties. Since Akyaka is a member of Cittaslow, loud music is prohibited.

In ecovillage areas such as Kabak Valley and Faralya, cash payment is common, wifi and card infrastructure is limited; We recommend that you have enough cash before your visit.

FAQ

Dalaman or Bodrum? Bodrum is luxury and nightlife focused (Yalıkavak, Türkbükü). Dalaman region focuses on nature, ancient cities and parachutes. Dalaman for the family, Dalaman for the couple romantic getaway, Bodrum for the young group party. In terms of price, Dalaman is more affordable than Göcek.

How many days to visit? 3 days is enough for Ölüdeniz core. Adding 5 days Saklıkent + Patara is ideal. With 7 days, you can cover the entire region up to Dalyan and Kalkan. You can walk the Lycian Way in 10+ days (540 km between Fethiye and Antalya).

Is paragliding safe? With a certified pilot, with a certified company, when the wind conditions are suitable, yes — Babadağ has the best certified pilot pool in Türkiye. However, like all flights, there is no zero risk. Get an insurance package, ask your doctor if you have life-changing illnesses.

Which hotel should you stay in? Family + beach: Sarigerme Hilton/Iberotel. Romance + view: Faralya Reflections, Hillside Beach Club. Budget + social: Hisarönü hostels, Ölüdeniz Beach Club. Luxury: D-Resort Göcek, Lujo Hotel. Backpacker: Kabak Valley ecovillage bungalows.

Is Babadağ chair lift open? Open between May and October. Ticket 1500-2200 ₺ (only cable car, without parachute). There is a hill restaurant. It is closed during the winter months due to snow.

What is Dalyan mud bath like? Sulfur thermal mud pool in Sultaniye Thermal Springs. You enter in your swimsuit, stay in the mud for 15 minutes and dry in the sun, then take a shower. It has a skin-softening effect, but be cautious of scientific "healing" claims. Fun activity for the child.

Can you go to Patara beach by car? Yes, there is a short walk from the ancient city entrance parking lot to the beach. Ancient city + beach combo ticket is 150 ₺. Parking fills up on summer weekends — go before 10 a.m.

Is Gocek expensive? Marina restaurants are at Istanbul Etiler/Bebek level. Dinner for two people with wine is 3000-5000 ₺. Hotel room starts from 15000₺ per night. Just coming to see it costs 1500-2000 ₺ with coffee + boat tour. For the budget, stay in the village of Inlice on the opposite coast and visit Göcek.

How to get to Butterfly Valley? Two options: by boat from Ölüdeniz pier (300-500 ₺ per person, departure at 10:30 in season) or rappelling from Faralya village (180 m steep rock, only experienced — bad advice, serious danger).

What is the region like between November and March Most beach restaurants, parachute companies and resorts are closed. The weather is 12-18°, there is a lot of rain. Fethiye center and Dalaman center are open all year round, but they are dead from a touristic point of view. The Lycian Way walk can be done in these months (ideal temperature), and the ancient cities can be visited alone — Xanthos, Letoon, Tlos without the crowds is a different feeling.
