City Guide

When to go, how to get there, city transportation, accommodation, budget and practical tips.

About

Izmir is the third largest city in Türkiye and the center of the Aegean Region. The urban fabric, which spreads for 70 kilometers along the gulf coast with a population of approximately 4.4 million, carries both the layers of ancient Smyrna and the modernization story of the Republic. The ferry line starting from Konak and extending to Karşıyaka makes the geography of the city livable like a pond, not like an ocean between two shores.

The character of the city differs markedly from Türkiye's major metropolises. People of Izmir generally have a relaxed, direct profile, who like to live by the sea and prefer to live their daily life on the street. The city describes itself as Türkiye's "most secular" centre; Freedom of dress, access to alcohol and nightlife are concrete reflections of this identity.

Geography makes Izmir much more than an ordinary coastal city. In an hour, you can reach the Roman columns of the Ancient City of Ephesus, the stone house streets of Alaçatı, and the turquoise bays of Çeşme. This environmental diversity makes Izmir the center for a holiday focused on history, the beach or gastronomy.

Part of modern Smyrna was destroyed by fire in 1922; Today's Konak and Alsancak line are the parts that still carry Levantine architectural elements and late Ottoman texture. Understanding this breaking point in history makes it easier to read the contemporary face of the city.

When to Go

Izmir has a typical Mediterranean climate: dry and hot summers, mild and rainy winters. In terms of travel, the golden window is mid-April - mid-June and mid-September - mid-November. During these months, daytime temperatures are in the 20-28°C range, sea water is still or has become warm, and hotel prices are below their peak.

In July and August, the daytime temperature is constantly between 33-38°C; Humidity may be high. During this period, it is logical to shift the tour program to early morning and after 18 pm and spend the day by the pool or air-conditioned museums. Beach reservations towards Çeşme and Alaçatı should be made by the end of May at the latest.

Winter months (December-February) make Izmir quieter, rainier and in the 8-15°C range. These months are actually ideal for Ephesus and museum visits; There are no crowds, the light is soft, the prices are low. Only beach and outdoor restaurant enjoyment is limited.

It is important to pay attention to the festival windows: the Izmir European Jazz Festival at the beginning of March, the International Izmir Festival (including Ephesus Ancient Theater concerts) during June-July, and the Izmir International Fair at the beginning of September affect the city's hotel occupancy and evening crowds.

How to get there

By plane. Adnan Menderes Airport (IATA: ADB) is 16 km away from the city center and is one of the five busiest airports in Türkiye. More than 40 flights depart from Istanbul daily; Flight duration is approximately 1 hour. THY, Pegasus and AnadoluJet mainly share capacity. Ticket prices are around 700-2200 ₺ one way between Istanbul and Izmir (early 2026); Early booking opportunities can be obtained when purchased 2-3 months in advance. Approximately 800-1900 ₺ one way from Ankara (1 hour 10 min); Direct flights from Europe are concentrated on the route Frankfurt, Berlin, Amsterdam and Brussels.

By bus. The Istanbul-Izmir line takes 8-9 hours and is priced around 1100-1500 ₺ (Kâmil Koç, Pamukkale, Metro; early 2026). 7-8 hours from Ankara and approximately 1100-1400 ₺. Izmir Intercity Bus Terminal is 7 km away from the center; It is easy to reach by İZBAN and bus.

By train. The Ankara-İzmir high-speed train project is still under construction. Today, Ankara-Izmir train connection is indirect and long; In practice, plane or bus is preferred.

By car. Istanbul-Izmir is 475 km, it takes approximately 5.5 hours via Istanbul-Izmir highway (including Osmangazi Bridge). Total highway fees are around 700-900 ₺ (early 2026). Ankara-İzmir 590 km / 7 hours (Afyon-Uşak route).

Urban Transportation

Izmir is Türkiye's easiest metropolis in terms of public transportation. Izmirim Card is valid in the entire system: metro, bus, ferry and İZBAN are integrated into a single card. Full boarding 25 ₺ (early 2026); Transfers within 90 minutes after the first boarding are free.

İZBAN (commuter train) combines the airport-city center-Aliağa line on a single backbone. You can reach Alsancak from the airport in 30 minutes; The fare for the ADB-Alsancak line is around 25-35 ₺ (depending on distance, early 2026). The same route by taxi takes 45-60 minutes depending on traffic and is significantly more expensive.

Metro connects Konak, Üçyol, Hilal, Halkapınar and Bornova routes with a single line (M1, Fahrettin Altay - Evka 3); The flight frequency is 5-7 minutes. The ongoing second line (Buca metro) and Karşıyaka extension works constantly update the planning.

Ferry is the characteristic transportation experience of Izmir. Konak-Karşıyaka takes you to the opposite shore in 15 minutes; Bostanlı, Üçkuyular, Pasaport and Alsancak piers are also on the line. Passing by ferry in the evening is an experience in itself with its sunset view.

Taxi are plentiful and relatively cheap; BiTaksi application is preferred for its fixed price and security. The bicycle rental system called Bisim is common on the Kordon and Karşıyaka coastline.

Accommodation Regions

Alsancak is the most logical region for those who come for the first time. Kıbrıs Şehitleri Street, Kordon, restaurant and bar density, ferry port and İZBAN stop are within walking distance. Boutique hotels and middle-upper segment chains (Mövenpick, Swissôtel, Mövenpick Living) are concentrated around Alsancak.

Mansion offers a more historical texture. Kemeraltı, Smyrna Agora, Kadifekale and Elevator are accessible on foot. The number of hotels is limited, but boutique historical mansions (Hisar Hotel, Hotel Antik Han) are practical for a trip to the center.

Karşıyaka is the opposite shore that can be crossed by ferry. Bostanlı beach offers seaside restaurants and a quieter local life. Hotel options are limited; Short-term apartment rental is preferred.

Çeşme and Alaçatı should be the central choice for those who come with a beach holiday focus. The luxury hotels around Çeşme Marina (Sheraton, Radisson, Le Méridien) and the stone house boutique hotels of Alaçatı appeal to different budgets. For the first trip, we recommend at least two nights of accommodation in Alsancak and then in Çeşme/Alaçatı.

Budget Plan

3-day estimated budget (per person):

Category Economical Medium Luxury
Flight ticket (Istanbul round trip) 1400₺ 2400₺ 4200₺
Hotel (1 night) 900 ₺ (hostel/boutique) 2200 ₺ (Mövenpick, Crowne Plaza) 5500 ₺ (Swissôtel, Çeşme luxury)
Food (daily) 400₺ 800₺ 1800₺
Activity + transportation (daily) 250₺ 500₺ 1100₺
3 days total 4350 ₺ 9300 ₺ 22.900 ₺

If Ephesus day is included, an extra 1000-1500 TL (entrance fees, transportation, lunch) will be added. For a Çeşme/Alaçatı beach trip, sun loungers, beach and dinner items can increase the price per day to 1500-3000 TL in the summer months. Compared to Izmir, Istanbul and Antalya, hotel starting prices are reasonable; savings appear primarily on accommodation.

Practical Tips

  1. Do not skip the ferry experience. Konak-Karşıyaka or Bostanlı-Üçkuyular line with Izmirim Card: 25 ₺ (early 2026); It is the most economical tourist activity of the city with its sunset view in the evening.
  2. Visit Kemeraltı in the morning. It is closed on Sunday; Between 09:00-12:00 on weekdays, the tradesmen are fresh and the crowd is small.
  3. For Ephesus, enter through the upper gate. The Magnesia Gate (upper gate) → Liman Kapısı (lower gate) route is constantly downhill, it is much more comfortable.
  4. Use the highway on the way to Çeşme. With views of the coastal road, but 30 minutes longer; It gets clogged during holidays.
  5. Take the joy sandwich as a package and take it to Kordon. This is the Izmir tradition; Ideal for dining overlooking the beach.
  6. Be careful with Şirince fruit wines. Some stalls sell poor quality products; Do not buy a large bottle without tasting it.
  7. Download the BiTaksi app. Stay away from taxis that refuse to open or turn off the meter.

Travel Guide with Children

Izmir is a city with a high child-friendly score (4.4/5). Since Kordon and Karşıyaka coastline is flat and wide, baby strollers are comfortable; Ferry travel is both transportation and entertainment. Thanks to its Aegean climate, it offers ideal conditions for traveling with children in spring and autumn.

Recommendations by Age Group

  • 0-3 years: Kordon beach walk and Karşıyaka beach are ideal for baby strollers. Ferry (Konak-Karşıyaka, 15 min) is a short experience that calms babies. Kültürpark's green areas and amusement park are suitable resting points for little ones.
  • 4-7 years: Izmir Wildlife Park (zoo) offers full day activities. The rise of the Elevator is exciting for children. The shallow beaches of Çeşme and Ilıca are suitable for learning swimming.
  • 8-12 years: Roman history comes to life in the Ancient City of Ephesus; The Library of Celsus and the ancient theater impress children. Discovering the scents of spices and the culture of tradesmen in Kemeraltı Bazaar is a different experience. Beginning windsurfing lessons in Çeşme are suitable for this age.
  • Ages 13+: Alaçatı's stone house streets and boutique shops attract the attention of young people. Boat tours and hiking in Foça offer adventure. Alsancak's cafe and street culture is an atmosphere that adolescents enjoy.

Top 5 Kid-Friendly Activities

  1. Izmir Wildlife Park — Animal observation outdoors on an area of 425 decares in Bornova. You can spend a full day with picnic areas and mini trains.
  2. Kordon Bicycle Tour (Bisim) — Rent a bike from Bisim stations and pedal along the coast from Konak to Alsancak; Safe and straight line for children.
  3. Karşıyaka Crossing by Ferry — The 15-minute Konak-Karşıyaka ferry is the most economical tourist activity in Izmir; Meeting the seagulls on the deck is a children's favorite.
  4. Ephesus Ancient City — An open-air museum that brings the Roman period alive for children aged 8+. It is more comfortable for children to enter from the upper gate and walk downhill to the lower gate.
  5. Çeşme Ilıca Beach — Thanks to its shallow and warm water, children can swim safely. There are playgrounds and ice cream stands along the beach.

Practical Information

  • Baby stroller: Kordon, Karşıyaka beach and Alsancak are flat and comfortable. The narrow streets of Kemeraltı and the Kadifekale hill are not suitable for strollers; Prefer kangaroo/starter.
  • Children's menu: Chain restaurants and beach venues have children's menus. There are no separate menus in tradesmen restaurants; pita, meatballs and pasta are available everywhere.
  • Children's ticket discounts: 0-6 years old is free at the museums, 6-18 years old is discounted. With Izmirim Card, public transportation is free for children under the age of 6. There is a child discount at the entrance to Ephesus.
  • Toilet: Museums, mosques and shopping malls are reliable toilet points. There are municipal toilets on the promenade and the beach line (10-15 ₺).

Warnings

  • During the summer months, there is very little shade in Ephesus and other ancient cities; Hats, sunscreen and plenty of water are essential for children. Plan the trip for early morning.
  • Traffic is very heavy in the direction of Çeşme and Alaçatı on July-August weekends; Families with children should prefer weekdays.
  • The climb to Kadifekale hill is steep and tiring; Take a taxi with young children, take a short trip and get off in the light.

Local Label / Culture Notes

Izmir is one of the cities in Türkiye with a daily life culture closest to the West. Freedom of dress is high; The boundaries of beachwear become clearly blurred on the beach and in the city. Alcohol is easy to access and drinking beer on the street is considered normal in centers like Alsancak.

Its accent is one of the most distinctive local dialects in Türkiye; Abbreviations such as "geliyom", "yapıyom" are a natural part of daily language. People of Izmir prefer direct communication; An overly formal attitude is sometimes read as distant.

Head coverings are expected for women when visiting mosques; It is given free of charge at the entrance of Hisar Mosque and Yalı Mosque. Friday prayer times change the trade density between 12:30-13:30.

Beach culture is close to the western style towards Çeşme; The sun lounger system, beach bars and marina restaurants form the basis. Foça and Karaburun still offer a more local and family-oriented coastal style.

FAQ

How many days to visit Izmir? The city center (Kemeraltı, Konak, Alsancak, Kordon, Elevator, Agora) is easily completed in 2 days. 3 days with Ephesus day and 4-5 days if Çeşme/Alaçatı beach is added is an ideal program. If you spare 7 days, alternatives such as Şirince, Foça, Sığacık and Karaburun are also included in the program.

Should you stay in Çeşme or Alaçatı? Çeşme is more settled and family holiday oriented with its marina and beach access. Alaçatı boutique hotels are preferred for couples or small groups with their stone house streets and hipster night atmosphere. Two nights in Çeşme + one night in Alaçatı is a common combination.

How to reach the city from Adnan Menderes Airport? İZBAN train is the most logical option: Alsancak in 30 minutes, approximately 25-35 ₺ (early 2026, depending on distance). HAVAŞ bus costs approximately 200 ₺ and takes 40 minutes. It takes 45-60 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic, and is significantly more expensive than other options. Night time intervals become less frequent; Taxi may be practical for late arriving flights.

How to go on the Ephesus tour, is a guide needed? 1 hour driving by private vehicle is sufficient; Selcuk car park is useful. If a guided tour is preferred, the historical layers of the ancient city will be read much more meaningfully; A professional guide is charged around 1500-3000 ₺ for half a day (early 2026).
