About
The Maldives is not a single island — it is 1,192 coral islands arranged in 26 atolls, stretching 871 km north-south in the Indian Ocean. The average size per island is smaller than a football field and the longest side exceeds 1.5 km. The lowest sea level in the world: 1.5 meters on average. Climate change could turn that sentence into past tense in 50 years — it's the only holiday destination anyone is in a rush to go see.
The concept of overwater villas spread to the world from here. The first models in the 1970s are standard at more than 150 resorts today. There is usually only one hotel on an island — so the "private island" feeling cannot be replicated any other way. The differences between resorts are crazy: budget guesthouse on the local island of Maafushi is 80 USD/night, Soneva Jani overwater villa is 8,000 USD/night. Same country, two different universes.
There is one of the richest coral ecosystems in the world underwater. More than 2,000 species of fish, manta rays (especially in Baa Atolu Hanifaru Bay May-November), whale sharks (South Ari Atolu year-round), turtles, rocky reef sharks. Even snorkeling is extremely satisfying for those without a diving certificate — most resorts' house reefs are full of parrotfish at a depth of half a metre.
Transfer time is a critical decision when choosing a resort: 30 minutes fast boat (atolls close to Male, North/South Male) or 30-50 minutes water plane (far atolls such as Baa, Raa, Ari, Dhaalu). The fast boat is cheap ($100-150/person) and operates any time of the day; The hydroplane is expensive ($400-700/person) and only flies in daylight — flights arriving at night require an overnight stay at the Hulhumale hotel and transfer in the morning. Remote resorts are quieter and have more pristine reefs, while closer resorts stay on budget.
When to Go
Maldives is tropical, with two main seasons: dry season (November-April) and wet season (May-October). The temperature is 26-32°C year-round, the water is 27-29°C — the difference is not in the season, but in the case of rainfall and waves.

Our general recommendation: November or March-April — rain is low, crowds are moderate, prices are lower than the December-February peak period. If you want to swim with manta rays, September-November is not to be missed; Prices are also low because it is labeled "wet season". It's a classic for a December-January honeymoon, but hotel prices are 50% higher, book early.
How to get there
Maldives' only international airport, Velana International Airport (MLE), is located on the artificial island of Hulhule, just opposite the capital Male.
Flights from Türkiye:

THY (direct, once a day) |
| Istanbul (IST) - MLE |
11-14 hours |
Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar (Doha), Etihad (Abu Dhabi) |
| Istanbul (SAW) - MLE |

FlyDubai + Emirates connecting |
The most practical THY direct flight is - Istanbul at 02:00 in the morning, Male at 12:30 in the afternoon. Return to Male at 14:00, Istanbul at 23:30. Connecting flights are budget-friendly, but 16 hours of travel on the honeymoon will ruin your morale on the first day. Ticket price Türkiye-Maldives 800-1.500 EUR off-season, 1.800-3.000 EUR December-January peak.
Transfer from Velana to resort:
- Fast boat: 30 minutes - 2 hours (depending on distance), 100-250 USD/person round trip. Only option for nearby atolls (North/South Male). It works 24 hours a day.
- Waterplane (Trans Maldivian Airways, Manta Air): 20-50 min, 400-700 USD/person round trip. For remote atolls (Baa, Raa, Ari, Dhaalu). Flies in daylight only — an overnight stay in Hulhumale is a must for flights arriving at night.
- Domestic flight + boat: For very remote southern atolls (Addu, Gaafu). Local airline (Maldivian) + boat transfer. 1-1.5 hours total.
Our recommendation: if it's a honeymoon or first visit to the Maldives remote resort + hydroplane. The view is worth the money you pay exponentially. For family or budget plans close resort + fast boat is sufficient.
Transportation within the Island
There is no such thing as "urban transportation" in the Maldives — each resort is on its own island, the island is a few hundred meters away. Most places within the resort are walkable, some have bicycles/golf carts for island tours. If you want to go outside the resort:
- Resort excursions: Diving, snorkeling, sandbank picnic, dolphin cruise, local island tour — all organized through the resort. Comfort and safety are top notch, price is expensive.
- Fast boat rental: Ferry (cheap, slow, 2-4 hours) or fast boat (25-50 USD) from Male for local island stays.
- Water taxi: 24-hour ferry between Male and Hulhumale, 15 minutes, 11 MVR (~1 USD).
If you are going to travel between local islands, Maldives' domestic transportation is boat-oriented. Maldivian Airways has domestic flights and speedboat services to travel between the atolls. If there is no urgency, the boat is enjoyable.
Resort Selection (Accommodation Regions)
In Maldives, "region" means "atol". The choice of atoll completely determines your holiday.
North Male Atoll (near Velana): Classic diving spots such as Banana Reef, HP Reef. Resorts are mostly within fast boat distance. Budget-middle segment. Ideal for families and first Maldives visits. Examples: Kurumba, Bandos, Soneva Fushi (north).
South Male Atolu: Honeymoon classics like Cocoa Island, Anantara Veli, Velassaru. Fast boat 40-60 min. Underwater visibility is generally excellent.
Baa Atolu (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve): Hanifaru Bay manta spot is here. Soneva Fushi, Anantara Kihavah, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru. Waterplane 30-40 min. Predominantly in the luxury segment. Mandatory for mantas from May to November.
Ari Atolu (especially South Ari): Whale shark is here all year round. Constance Halaveli, W Maldives, Conrad Rangali (Ithaa restaurant). Waterplane 25-35 min.
Raa Atolu: Newly developed area, calmer and more pristine. The Standard, Joali Being. Waterplane 40-50 min.
Dhaalu / Lhaviyani Atolu: Niyama (Subsix club), Hurawalhi (5.8 Undersea Restaurant). Semi-distal segment.
Maafushi (local island): Not a resort paradise but a budget traveler's paradise. Guesthouse 60-100 USD, sightseeing tours are cheap. No alcohol, bikinis on the private beach.
Adult-only or family-friendly: Most luxury resorts are adult-only (16+ or 18+). For families: Kurumba, Kuredu, Bandos, Anantara Dhigu, JA Manafaru. For honeymoon: Soneva Fushi, Cocoa Island, Conrad Rangali, W Maldives, Anantara Veli (16+).

Practical items: Fast boat transfer 100-150 USD/person round-trip, water plane 400-700 USD/person round-trip, diving (2 tanks) 150-220 USD, snorkel tour 40-60 USD, spa massage 150-300 USD/hour, romantic dinner 200-450 USD (2 persons), resort bar cocktail 15-25 USD, resort meal à la carte 80-150 USD/person.
All-inclusive vs half board comparison: In all-inclusive (AI) resorts, the difference is clear — everything from food to drinks to some water sports are included. Half board (HB - breakfast + evening) starts 30-40% lower in total, but once drinks and lunch are added the difference closes. AI is generally more affordable for a honeymoon for 2 people, HB gives flexibility for budget or solo travel.
Practical Tips
Currency: Maldivian Rupee (MVR) is official but USD is dominant in resorts. Both MVR and USD accepted on local island and Male. The card works everywhere — resort expenses are automatically charged to the villa and paid once upon departure. Tip not included — expect $5-10/day to resort staff or $20-30 end-of-trip.
Water: Tap water is not safe. Resorts mostly provide drinking water free of charge in the villa (jug with filter). Bottled water is expensive ($5-10). On the local islands, you must drink bottled water.
Alcohol: Maldives is a Muslim country, sale of alcohol is legal only on the resort islands and in a single specially licensed Hulhumale hotel (Hulhule Island Hotel). There is no alcohol on the local islands (including Maafushi). Unlimited at the resort. Bringing alcohol with you is prohibited and confiscated by customs.
Clothing: Everything is allowed at the resort (bikini, swimsuit, beachwear). In Male and the local islands covered clothing is mandatory — shoulders and knees covered, women's headscarf is not compulsory but respectful. On local island beaches, there is a separate 'tourist beach' and swimming is indoors at the main beach.
Scam alert: Those offering "cheap transfers" at Velana airport often turn out to be equivalent to or expensive than the resort transfer — use your resort's official transfer. Non-resort tour vendors (especially in Male) may charge extra, clarify the price in advance.
Climate: UV index 11+ (extremely high). Sunscreen SPF 50+ is mandatory. Reef-safe sunscreen is recommended — non-mineral cream is prohibited at some resorts. Wear a t-shirt or rashguard while snorkeling/diving. Hat and glasses are a must.
Local island label: Do not bring alcohol and pork when visiting the local island, do not eat in public places during Ramadan. Friday 12:00-14:00 is mosque time, shops are closed.
Wi-Fi: Resort villas generally have free Wi-Fi, speed variable — satellite connection is slow on remote atolls. Mobile operator (Ooredoo, Dhiraagu) tourist SIM card 25-40 USD, signal in most resorts.
Travel Guide with Children
Maldives is paradise for children, but with only one condition: the right resort. Adult-only resorts do not accept children.
Recommendations by Age Group
0-3 years: Shallow lagoons are ideal for babies, but the long flight + transfer is tiring. Choose nearby resort (fast boat). Kurumba, Kuredu, Anantara Dhigu with nursery services are suitable. Bring baby cotton formula, it may be limited at the resort.
4-7 years: Snorkeling starting age. Family paddle diving at the shallow house reef. Resorts' 'Kids Club' programs (Soneva Fushi 'The Den', Four Seasons 'Kuda Velaa') provide hours of entertainment. Whale Submarine is a kids' favorite.
8-12 years: Snorkeling and diving beginner (PADI Junior 10 years+). Kayaks, paddleboards, banana boats. Sandbank picnic and dolphin cruise appeal to this age. The possibility of seeing a manta (season) is unforgettable for a lifetime.
Ages 13+: Full diving certificate (PADI Open Water), parasailing, jet ski. Underwater experiences like Subsix. Soneva Fushi's open-air cinema is a hit with teenagers.
Top 5 Kid-Friendly Activities
Lagoon snorkeling (house reef) — Seeing turtles and parrot fish at a depth where your feet touch the ground is rare on any other holiday.
Whale Submarine — The submarine tour, which goes down to 100 meters without going under water, is suitable for older ages and small children.
Sandbank picnic — Taking a boat out to an empty sand dune is a robinson crusoe experience for kids.
Resort Kids Club — Kids at play, parents in the villa — a win-win equation.
Dolphin cruise — 80% chance of meeting a dolphin at South Male Atoll, kids jumping around while watching from the side of the boat.
Practical Information
- Baby stroller: No need at the resort, most places are sandy. If needed, request it in advance from the resort.
- Kid's menu: Available in almost every resort, pizza-pasta-chicken classic. Maldivian mas huni may also appeal to children.
- Child price: Generally 0-5 years old is free, 6-12 years old is 50% discount, 12+ adult price. 2 years+ full price for waterplane transfer.
- Bed: Overwater villa is honeymoon focused — for the family, look for the beach villa or 'family room' option.
- Health: Vaccination is not mandatory. There is no malaria. Sunstroke and insect bites are the main risks. There is a small clinic at Velana airport, in serious cases Male hospital is 20 minutes away.
Warnings
- Open stairs and terraces in overwater villas are dangerous for small children — beach villas are safer.
- Coral soles are sharp, beach shoes are mandatory.
- There are poisonous fish such as lion fish and scorpion fish, the rule is not to touch them while snorkeling.
- Sunstroke is the most common problem. Shade is required between 11:00-15:00.
- The resort has a storm protocol for lightning during tropical rainfall, follow it.
Local Label and Culture Notes
Maldives is a 99% Muslim country. On the resort islands, the country's religious-cultural rules are greatly relaxed — alcohol is allowed, clothing is free, Ramadan is not affected. Different on local island or Male:
Greetings: "Assalamu Alaikum" is the most common greeting. Locals are friendly and helpful — a port culture on the edge of the Indian Ocean.
Clothing: Local island covered shoulders and knees mandatory, sleeved top and long skirt/trousers for women. There are 'tourist beach' sections on the beaches — bikini-only swimming there, off the main beach. Full hijab is required to enter mosques.
Restaurant: No alcohol in local restaurants. During Ramadan the restaurant may be closed on local islands during the day or there is open service with partitions (secret booth for non-Muslims). Friday 12:00-14:00 prayer time.
Tip: 10% standard at local restaurant, common at resort but optional. A tip of $5-10 per day for staff or $20-30 at the end of the trip is appreciated.
Divehi language: “Shukuriyaa” (thanks), “Kihineh?” (how are you?), “Vaaru rangalhu” (very beautiful) — basic words make locals smile. English is understood at native level in resorts and on local islands.
Boduberu: Traditional Maldivian drum music. In the evening, relax on local island tours or at the resort's cultural night. Rhythm is of African origin, brought with traders for centuries.
Environmental sensitivity: Breaking coral, touching sea creatures, taking anything from the sea is prohibited (high fine). The Maldives has one of the world's first coral ecosystem conservation programs. The number of resorts requiring reef-safe sunscreen is increasing.
FAQ
How to get to Maldives from Türkiye?
The easiest way is THY's direct flight from Istanbul to Male (8.5 hours, night departure). For connecting options, Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), Etihad (Abu Dhabi) are economical, but the journey takes 11-16 hours. When you arrive at Velana Airport, your resort transfer (fast boat or hydroplane) meets you.
Should you go to a resort or a local island?
It depends on budget and expectations. Resort (300-2,000 USD/night) private island with one hotel, all-inclusive luxury, unlimited activities, alcohol allowed. Local island (like Maafushi, 60-100 USD/night) budget friendly, full of local life, alcohol-free, limited beach (tourist beach only). Honeymoon or resort if comfort is a priority, local island if budget and authentic experience are a priority. Ideal: 2 nights Maafushi + 4 nights resort hybrid.
Is waterplane mandatory?
No, only for remote resorts (Baa, Raa, Ari, Dhaalu, Lhaviyani atolls). Nearby atolls (North/South Male) 30-60 minutes by fast boat. Hydroplane is expensive ($400-700/person round trip) and only flies in daylight — flights arriving at night require an overnight stay in Hulhumale and transfer in the morning.
Which month is the best for honeymoon?
November-April is the dry season, ideal for honeymoon. December-January is the busiest and most expensive (50% increase). Best price-comfort balance: Mid-November or March-April. If you want the chance to swim with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay, May-November is the time for cheaper prices (rainy season).
All-inclusive or half board?
For a honeymoon for 2 people or a stay of more than 7 days, all-inclusive (AI) is generally more affordable — food, drinks, some water sports are included. The starting price for half board (HB) is 30-40% lower, but there is an extra expenditure of 100-200 USD per day (drinks, lunch, extra activities). For a budget or solo trip HB is flexible, for couple and long stay AI is sensible.
Is a diving certificate required?
No. Most coral reefs can be seen from the surface with a snorkel. If you want to dive, resorts have 'Discover Scuba Diving' programs (150-200 USD for 1 day without certification) or 3-4-day PADI Open Water course (450-600 USD). Snorkeling is sufficient on the manta ray and whale shark tours.
Where to drink alcohol in Maldives
Only on resort islands and at Hulhule Island Hotel's Belgian Beer Cafe. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on Male and local islands (including Maafushi). Bringing alcohol with you will be seized by customs. Unlimited free time at the resort. Respect the rules of Muslim countries.
Is there Turkish food available?
Generally no. Resort menus are international (continental Asian, Mediterranean, Italian, BBQ) and Maldivian classics. Olive Garden Maldives in Male has hummus and kebab varieties, but there is no truly Turkish restaurant. If you have a craving, it is practical to bring spices (chili peppers, thyme) with you.
Is vaccination required? What are the health risks?
There is no mandatory vaccination. There is no malaria. Recommended vaccinations: Hepatitis A, tetanus. Health risks are mostly sunstroke, dehydration, coral cuts, sea creature bites. There are small clinics in the resorts, and there is a fully equipped hospital (ADK, Tree Top Hospital) in Male. Travel insurance is a must — hydroplane evacuations exceed $10,000.
