About Gaziantep
Gaziantep is the only city in Türkiye that was included in the UNESCO Creative Cities network in the "Gastronomy" category in 2015. This is not just a title on paper; The pistachio fields on the airport road, the Turkish delight and Turkish coffee greeting you in hotel lobbies, and the smell of coal rising from every street in the evening are the first things you will notice when you land in the city. Pistachio cuisine constitutes the basic identity of the city with more than 400 local dishes and pistachios, which are considered to be the highest quality in the world.
The second layer is history. The city has witnessed the Hittite, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods; Traces of these civilizations can still be seen in the old city neighborhoods. The ancient city of Belkıs/Zeugma, in the east of the city, was founded in the 3rd century BC on the banks of the Euphrates River and was one of the important transit centers of the Roman period. The mosaics, which were saved before being submerged by the construction of the Birecik Dam in 2000, are today exhibited in the Gaziantep Zeugma Mosaic Museum and are considered the world's largest mosaic collection.
The third fact is a practical warning: Gaziantep is the largest city in Southeastern Anatolia, with a population of approximately 2.15 million and a surface area of 6,219 km². Although Hatay and Kahramanmaraş were not affected by the February 2023 earthquake, partial restoration is ongoing in some historical buildings. Museums, baklava shops, kebab shops and most of the Kale surroundings are at full capacity.
When to Go
Gaziantep is under the influence of a continental climate: summers are very hot and dry, winters are cold and rainy. Humidity is low compared to coastal cities, so the summer heat feels dry but scorching.

Our practical advice: March-May and October-November are the most suitable time periods for Gaziantep. GastroAntep Gastronomy Festival at the end of September is the period when you can experience the city's culinary identity most intensely.
How to get there
Gaziantep Oğuzeli Airport (GZT) is approximately 20 km away from the city center and is one of the busiest airports in Southeastern Anatolia. There are daily direct flights from Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
| Origin City |
Duration |
Frequency |
| Istanbul (IST/SAW) |
1 hour 45 min |
15+ flights per day (THY, Pegasus, AnadoluJet) |
| Ankara (ESB) |
1 hour 15 min |
4-6 times a day |
| Izmir (ADB) |
1 hour 40 min |
1-2 direct flights per day (often with transfers) |
Prices are variable due to inflation in Türkiye; We recommend that you make a comparison before purchasing your ticket.
Gaziantep flight ticket tips: We recommend that you buy tickets at least 3 weeks in advance during holidays, festivals and school holidays. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are significantly cheaper than weekend flights. Pegasus' early morning departures are generally the most economical. We would like to remind you that Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) tariffs may be advantageous compared to Istanbul Airport (IST) for flights departing from Istanbul.
It is possible to reach by bus, but the distances are long: it takes approximately 15-17 hours from Istanbul and 10-11 hours from Ankara. The YHT line has not yet reached Gaziantep; The Ankara-Sivas-Diyarbakir YHT project is planned but not completed. Current train options are relatively slow and require connecting travel.
Urban Transportation
Gaziantep center is relatively compact; The historical center (Castle, Coppersmiths' Bazaar, museums) is largely a walkable area. In modern regions, the network of trams and buses is extensive.
From airport to center:
- HAVAŞ bus: Approximately 45 minutes, in the direction of the terminal-airport; There are flights connected to each flight.
- City bus: Approximately 60 minutes with transfers via GazAntKart; It is the most economical option.
- Taxi: Approximately 25 minutes; We recommend the BiTaksi application as a safe alternative.
- Hotel transfer: Some boutique hotels and mansions offer free or low-cost transfer services; We recommend that you ask before booking.
Inner city:
- Tram: It is the backbone of the city; It operates regular flights between the center and the university-Şahinbey line. Boarding is possible with GazAntKart.
- City bus: GazAntKart is valid; main lines operate hourly. Outside the historical center, the bus is more practical.
- Dolmuş: Provides economical transportation to surrounding districts and neighborhoods; Especially the lines through GazAntKart should be preferred.
- Taxi: We recommend using the BiTaksi application. We recommend that you do not get into vehicles that leave the road before the meter is turned on.
- GazAntKart: It is a common transportation card for buses, trams and minibuses. It can be obtained from vending machines and loaded at stations.
- Walking: The historical center (Castle, Coppersmiths, Zincirli Bedesten, museum line) is completely walkable; It takes 5-15 minutes between points. The old city is a stone floor; Comfortable shoes are our recommendation.
Budget Estimate
Gaziantep is one of Türkiye's relatively economical cities; However, on a holiday focused on Antep cuisine, the cost of the flavor line can rise rapidly. The following per capita daily ranges are based on average observations at the beginning of 2026; We would like to remind you that it may change due to inflation.

Fixed items (early 2026 bands):
- GZT Oğuzeli Airport transfer: HAVAŞ bus is the most economical option; It operates flights depending on each flight in the direction of the terminal-airport. The taxi takes approximately 25 minutes and is priced in the mid-range depending on distance; We recommend the BiTaksi application as a safe alternative.
- Public transportation (single ride): With GazAntKart, trams, public buses and minibuses can be used via a common card; The single boarding fee is below the Istanbul-Ankara level. We recommend that you verify the current tariff on the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality transportation page.
- Zeugma Mosaic Museum entrance: 200 ₺ (early 2026); Museum card is valid. If you are planning more than one museum, the Museumkart Plus option is more advantageous.
- Hasan Süzer Ethnography / Emine Göğüş Culinary Museum: Local museum tariff is in the low band; Two museums can be visited side by side in half a day.
- Halfeti + Rumkale agency tour: Packages including transportation, boat and lunch are around 350-500 ₺ per person.
- Average food ranges: Beyran or lahmacun at the tradesman restaurant is in the economical range; In classic kebab restaurants such as İmam Çağdaş, Çulcuoğlu and Burç Ocakbaşı, the price per person is in the middle-upper range. Mansion set menus such as Yesemek and Anadolu Evleri are in the luxury band.
- Gift baklava and pistachios: On a per kilogram basis, 1 kg of pistachio baklava is in the upper band according to the tariff of three classical names (İmam Çağdaş, Güllüoğlu, Koçak); Raw and roasted pistachios vary depending on the season.
- Accommodation: While boutique mansions in the historical center are in the upper band, three-star hotels in the modern area are in the middle band; A 40-70 percent increase is normal during holidays and festival periods.
Prices change rapidly due to inflation in Türkiye. We recommend that you verify hotel, restaurant and transportation prices from official sources before your visit; When making budget comparisons, you can use the early 2026 band levels as a reference.
Practical comparison: There is a significant cost difference between choosing a boutique mansion and Imam Contemporary/Shirvani style restaurant in the old city and a hostel and artisan restaurant holiday. The price difference between the Halfeti tour agency package and going with an individual vehicle is limited; A tour package is more practical for the first visit.
Travel Guide with Children
Gaziantep is a pleasant city for families with its child-friendly score of 4.2/5. The mosaics in the Zeugma Museum and the craftsmen in the Coppersmiths' Bazaar keep children's curiosity alive.
Recommendations by Age Group

Warnings
- Antep cuisine is spicy as standard — be sure to specify "non-spicy" and "without isot" for children, otherwise their mouths will burn.
- During the summer months (June-September), the midday temperature rises to 38-42 degrees — the stone-paved streets become like ovens. Take a break at the museum or shopping mall between 12:00-16:00.
- There are craftsmen working with fire and hot metal in the Coppersmiths' Bazaar — do not let small children near the stalls.
Local Tips
The secret of baklava - peanut ratio:
- The proportion of pistachios in real pistachio baklava is at least 40%; Some baklava makers in the field exceed this rate. The fact that the peanuts are fresh and green in color is an indicator of quality.
- Three classic names are İmam Çağdaş, Güllüoğlu and Koçak; We recommend you buy a slice of each and compare. The style is different: one is more classical, the other is more syrupy, the third is drier.
- The vacuum packages you ask about as "airplane packages" remain fresh for about a week; can be taken into hand luggage.
Breakfast and beyran hours:
- Tradesmen's breakfast is the busiest between 07:30-09:30; It may be difficult to find a place in this range. We recommend after 09:30 for a quiet breakfast.
- Beyran (lamb bone broth, meat, rice, garlic, hot pepper) is traditionally consumed between 06:00-09:00 in the morning; There are also places serving in the afternoon. It is one of the most different tastes of Antep, we recommend you to try it once.
- Katmer (sweet pastry prepared with cream and pistachios) is usually fresh in the morning and noon; There are also those who serve it in the evening.
Gift — spices, peanuts, copper:
- There are handmade copper coffee pots, cauldrons and trays in the Coppersmiths' Bazaar. We recommend that you choose pewter products; There is a bargaining margin.
- Almacı Market and Tahmis surroundings are the most suitable addresses for spices, peanuts, sumac, isot and pomegranate syrup. Ground pistachios should be consumed fresh; We recommend that you choose whole peanuts.
- Local fabric and woven products are available at Zincirli Bedesten; There is a price difference in tourist areas.
Religious sensitivity and Ramadan:
- Gaziantep is a conservative city; There are a limited number of alcoholic venues around the historical center (hotel bars, Anadolu Evleri, a few restaurants). There is no nightlife turned into a bar on the street.
- During Ramadan, the number of restaurants open during the day decreases; There are open addresses in the tourist center, but we recommend that you make a reservation close to iftar hours. Iftar menus are rich.
- We recommend that you be careful about clothing around mosques and traditional neighborhoods.
Health and safety:
- Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital (public) and Medical Park and Liv Hospital (private) are the main health institutions of the region. For emergencies you can call 112.
- It is a cuisine with a high level of bitterness; isot and pomegranate syrup are used extensively. For sensitive palates, ordering "painless" is understandable.
- Mains water is reported as drinkable, but the taste is questionable; We recommend that you choose bottled water.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days to visit Gaziantep?
3 days are enough just for the city center (museums, Castle, flavor line). When Halfeti and Rumkale are added, it is a comfortable 4-day program. 7 days seems to be the ideal duration, including Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman/Nemrut and Mardin alternatives.
Which is the best baklava restaurant?
There is no single answer. İmam Çağdaş, Güllüoğlu and Koçak are three classic names and each has a different style. İmam Çağdaş is classic, Güllüoğlu is closer to the syrupy side, Koçak is closer to the dry side. We recommend you take a slice of each of the three and compare; The ratio of pistachios and the crispness of the dough are indicators of quality.
What is the difference between beyran, katmer and tradesman breakfast?
Beyran is a hot soup-like dish cooked with lamb bone broth; It is consumed early in the morning. Katmer is a sweet pastry prepared with cream and pistachios and is served with breakfast. The artisan breakfast is a comprehensive table including cottage cheese, olives, cheese, sausage, eggs and katmer.
Does it make sense to go to Gaziantep with a child?
Yes; However, the stone floor of the historical center is difficult for strollers. For families with children, our recommendations are Zeugma Museum (1.5 hour program), Zoo (one of the largest zoos in Türkiye), Science and Art Center and Sanko Park children's areas. Antep cuisine is spicy; We recommend that you add the note "painless" when ordering.
How far is Halfeti? Is a day trip possible?
Halfeti is approximately 1.5 hours away from Gaziantep. Agency tours offer transportation + boat + lunch package. It is also possible to go by private vehicle; Boat rental can be done on site. When evaluated together with the Rumkale boat tour, it is a day-long program.
When should I buy a Gaziantep flight ticket?
We recommend that you purchase 3-4 weeks in advance for festivals, holidays and school holidays. In the off-season, purchasing 1-2 weeks in advance is sufficient. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are in the most suitable band. Early morning flights of Pegasus and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) tariffs on the Istanbul side may be more economical.
Is Gaziantep very hot during summer holidays?
In the July-August period, the temperature can reach 38-42°. Humidity is low but the sun is scorching; It is difficult to travel outside between 12:00 and 17:00. For summer holidays, we recommend that you change your schedule to morning and evening hours and shift the city trip to March-May or October-November.
What does a vegan or vegetarian eat in Gaziantep?
Antep cuisine is meat-based, but there are vegetarian options: olive oil stuffed stuffed meatballs, stuffed meatballs (meatless version is made locally), simit kebab (bulgur and vegetables), hummus, hash browns, raw meatballs (the classic version prepared without meat) and menengiç coffee are the prominent ones. For vegans, we recommend that you choose dairy-free pitas, olive oil dishes and vegetable main dishes; In traditional restaurants, asking in advance makes things easier.
Is alcohol available in the city, is there nightlife?
Alcohol service is limited; Anadolu Evleri, Papyrus, hotel bars and some restaurants in Sanko Park provide service. There is no alcohol sales around the mosque. Gaziantep is not a nightlife city, it is a dinner city; There is no concept of a street turned into a bar.
