City Guide

When to go, how to get there, city transportation, accommodation, budget and practical tips.

About Şanlıurfa

Şanlıurfa is not visited like any other city — this is the "City of the Prophets." Hz. The cave where Abraham was born, the place where Nimrod threw him into the fire, the well where Job was cured of his illness - are not legends, a mosque has been built on top of it, people can go into it and pray. See this not as a touristic spectacle, but as the daily rhythm of the city.

Then there is the issue of Göbeklitepe. 12,000 years ago — that is, 7 thousand years before the Egyptian pyramids, before agriculture, before pottery — someone erected 5-meter obelisks here and painted foxes, snakes and scorpions on them. Klaus Schmidt discovered it in 1994, human history was rewritten. You see the original columns in the museum, then you go to the field and watch replicas of the same columns as they appear in situ. This alone is reason enough to buy a flight ticket to Şanlıurfa.

Third is food. This is where raw meatballs were born — not vegan, with meat, 40 minutes of hand kneading, bulgur + finely ground meat + isot + dozens of spices. Urfa kebab without pain (opposite of Antep), lahmacun with thin dough, 25 types of breakfast spread. You learn how to hold the cup correctly while drinking Mırra (bitter black coffee).

With a population of 2.2 million, it is the 8th largest city in Türkiye and the most populous province in Southeastern Anatolia. It's a conservative city — alcohol is low, nightlife is based on "queen nights" rather than bars. When planning a holiday in Şanlıurfa, know this: Don't expect Antalya. Göbeklitepe + Balıklıgöl + Harran can fit here in 3 days. Halfeti + Karahantepe + Sıra night is comfortable in 5 days. You can also see Gaziantep in 7 days.

When to Go

Period Temperature Status
March - May 15-28°C Ideal. Flowering steppe, spring rains. My favorite.
June - August 35-45°C (!) Hell. You can only go out between 06-10 in the morning and 18-22 in the evening. Göbeklitepe without shadow at noon.
September - October 22-32°C Second favorite. Grape harvest, isot drying season, festival period.
November – February 5-15°C Calm. Rainy, sometimes snow. Hotel prices are the most affordable, there is no crowd.

Ramadan (February-early March in 2026, mid-February in 2027) — 60% of the city's restaurants are closed or curtains drawn during the day. Authentic for local experience, difficult for planning.

How to get there

Şanlıurfa flight ticket options:

  • GAP Airport (GNY), 34 km from the city. Old Şanlıurfa Airport is considered closed, all flights land at GNY.
  • Istanbul → GNY: 1 hour 50 min, approximately 1.200-2.800 ₺ (early 2026; THY, Pegasus, AnadoluJet). 8-10 trips a day, most convenient Tuesday-Wednesday.
  • Ankara → GNY: 1 hour 25 min, approximately 1,000-2,200 ₺ (early 2026). 2-4 times a day.
  • Izmir → GNY: limited direct flights, mostly with transfers in Istanbul, approximately 1,400-2,800 ₺ (early 2026).

The Urfa flight schedule gets busier in the summer — prices are 30-40 percent higher between May and September. It is wise to look 3 weeks in advance to buy a flight ticket to Şanlıurfa.

By bus (early 2026):

  • Istanbul → Şanlıurfa: 17-19 hours, approximately 1.600-2.400 ₺.
  • Ankara → Şanlıurfa: 11-12 hours, approximately 1.200-1.800 ₺.
  • Gaziantep → Şanlıurfa: 2 hours, approximately 150-250 ₺. Intercity minibuses also operate.

Car:

  • 1280 km, 14 hours from Istanbul (O-4 → Adana → Gaziantep).
  • 145 km, 1.5 hours from Gaziantep — good for a combined holiday.

Urban Transportation

Airport (GNY) to city (early 2026):

  • Havaş bus: approximately 150-250 ₺ (45 min).
  • Taxi: approximately 700-1,000 ₺ (35 min).

In the city (early 2026):

Warnings

  • The fish in Balıklıgöl are considered sacred, do not allow children to touch the fish or enter the water — they will disturb the local people.
  • There is no shade in Harran during summer noon — plan a short visit and keep water in the vehicle.

Local Tips

How to arrange Sira night? Individual tickets are difficult — contact the mansion hotels (Cevahir, Beyaz Köşk, Gülizar, Şah Konak) by phone. Packages including food, music and music are around 600-1,000 ₺ per person at the beginning of 2026. Choose a mixed program (men and women); Some mansions still follow the male-only tradition.

Dress code: The city is conservative. In mosques, women wear headscarf + long skirt/trousers, men wear long trousers. There are no strict rules for tourists on the street, but shorts + backless t-shirt will disturb the locals and attract stares. Cotton long shirt + thin trousers are the most practical (they also keep you cool in summer).

Ramadan timing: Ramadan 2026 falls in late February – early March. During visits during this period, nearly half of the restaurants may be closed or curtains drawn during the day. Iftar time is the summary of city life; However, it becomes difficult to find food during the day. We recommend that you do not coincide your Şanlıurfa holiday with Ramadan; It offers a different experience for visitors who want to experience the local culture in an iftar atmosphere.

How to eat raw meatballs? Put it on a lettuce leaf, top it with pomegranate syrup + lemon, wrap it like a wrap, and wash it with buttermilk. If you said it was "spicy", you won't be able to breathe after the third bite — ask for milk or yoghurt to go with it, it will balance it out.

Mırra ritual: Hold the cup with your right hand thumb + index finger. Bitter, memorized. Toffee on the side — that's the contrast. The waiter takes the cup back after payment. "Again?" He understands when you say "enough".

Do not go to Göbeklitepe at noon in summer: 45 degrees, unshaded area. Enter at 09:00 in the morning and leave at 11:00 at the latest. The sunset light is also beautiful, but at 19:30 on a summer evening it is still 35 degrees, water is a must.

Negotiable: The bargaining culture is strong in the Grand Bazaar, but it is not as aggressive as the Istanbul Grand Bazaar. 20-30% below the initial price is the normal target. If he orders tea, take it — you don't have to pay.

Isot vacuum package: In Sıpahı Market, 1 kg of real Urfa isot is around 300-450 ₺ at the beginning of 2026. Ask for vacuum pack; It smells and falls apart in the suitcase. It lasts easily for 6 months. A 200 ml jar of pomegranate syrup costs approximately 100-150 ₺; Choose plastic bottles instead of glass to take in your bag.

Holiday and Friday: Friday noon prayer between 12-14, Grand Bazaar is half closed. On the first day of Eid, half of the restaurants are closed. On Sunday, the Grand Bazaar is completely closed, museums are open.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days to visit Şanlıurfa? 3 days is enough for the city center + Göbeklitepe + Harran. 5 days comfortable including Karahantepe + Halfeti. 7 days, including Gaziantep, saturation point.

Göbeklitepe travel guide: museum or field first? First the museum, then the field. You see the original obelisks in the museum, and when you go to the field, you complete the replicas there in your mind. If you do it the other way around, the pitch feels like "a few pieces".

When to buy a flight ticket to Şanlıurfa? 3-4 weeks in advance. Summer season (May-September) has a 30-40% increase, winter (December-February) is the most suitable. Tuesday-Wednesday flights are 20-25% cheaper than Friday-Sunday.

Is there alcohol in the city? Very limited. Ipek Palas, hotel restaurants, some chains in Piazza Park serve it. There is no alcohol sold around the mosque, Tekel dealers are few and far between. It is more practical to leave the hotel for a drink and dinner in the evening.

Is raw meatball vegan or with meat? The original from Urfa is with meat — bulgur with beef + isot + 20+ spices, 40 minutes of hand kneading. The vegan/plant-based version has been around for the last 20 years and is popularized by "meatball restaurant" chains. Taste is different, try both.

Is summer really that hot? Yes. July-August averages 40-43°C, 45 degrees. No walking in open areas is allowed between noon hours (12-17). Göbeklitepe, Harran, Karahantepe are scheduled early in the morning or in the evening. Hotel pool is a must, air conditioning is mandatory.

Can Harran and Göbeklitepe happen on the same day? It's okay, but it's tiring. Wake up early (07:00), first Göbeklitepe (09-11), Harran at noon (13-16), and the city in the evening. Agency "Göbeklitepe + Harran + lunch" packages are 550-800 ₺ per person, more economical than going on your own.

Is Halfeti in Şanlıurfa or Gaziantep? Administratively, it is within the borders of Şanlıurfa, but it is 1.5 hours for those coming from Gaziantep and 2 hours from Şanlıurfa. A day trip makes sense for both cities, most agency packages depart from Gaziantep.

Is the museum card valid? Yes. Şanlıurfa Archeology + Mosaic Museum, Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe, Harran ruins - Müzekart is valid in all of them. If you are going to pay an individual fee, it will cost 700-900 ₺ in total, and you will pay the card fee in one day.

Şanlıurfa with a child: is it reasonable? Reasonable (score 4.2/5). The old town has stone floors, strollers are difficult. Göbeklitepe + Harran is interesting for children from teenagers to older children, younger ones may get bored. The biggest problem is heat — don't come with children in the summer. Children's menu is available in chain restaurants, but in traditional restaurants rice + chicken + ayran is required.
